Women intimately involved with registrants: Zoom presentation on Wednesday Feb. 23

Dr. Lisa Anne Zilney will give a Zoom lecture on her book, Impacts of Sex Crime Laws on the Female Partners of Convicted Offenders: Never Free of Collateral Consequences (Routledge, 2020).

This event will be Wednesday, February 23 at 9:30 AM Pacific Time, 12:30 PM Eastern time.

To attend, email Dr. Emily Horowitz at ehorowitz@sfc.edu. She will email you the Zoom link.

Dr. Zilney explores the experiences of women involved in intimate relationships with those on sex offense registries, focusing both on women who were involved with their partners prior to their offense and who stayed with them post-conviction, and those who became involved with their partners after their sex offense conviction. Zilney provides a unique look at the women who are the unstudied victims of draconian sex offender laws and one of the few sources of support for those living on registries.

So my wife is married to a registrant. Aka me. But she has to work during this time frame. Will this event be recorded by any chance for her(us) to view later?

This is the great paradox of the punishment of registry. I had a 3 year long SO treatment program where is was beaten into our heads that the best way to prevent a relapse was to have healthy relationships with others, a meaningful job, and a stable living environment; the three pillars that the registry undermines and tries to prevent you from achieving. Concerning the intimate relations, sometimes I get so discouraged I don’t want to try, because I know eventually I will need to reveal it to her. If I meet a woman that has a large circle of friends, I pretty much forgo any attempt because I fear if I tell her, she will most likely tell all her friends sooner or later, maybe not maliciously, but just in discussing the events. I already had this happen with a woman that shared a lot of acquaitences with me through a certain organization, she gossiped, and soon everyone knew. Nobody really said anything, but it made the environment so uncomfortable that I had to leave that organization. So good job feds. This is really helping keep people safe.

I am with some one on the registry for 3 years. We have lost 2 homes because of constantly being judged and bullied and homeless off and on because of it…I lost my first daughter twice to CPS now and they use him having to register against me. The first year none of the neighbors would speak to me or my daughter. Until a kid made friends with her finally. We get judged just as much as he does if not more. It makes life so hard and some one even poisoned my dog twice over him having to be on the registry. I can’t even let my dog out in her own yard anymore.

Good morning, I have not gotten the zoom link yet and it starts in a couple of hours.
